Tuscany

Tuscany is one of Italy's most celebrated wine regions, a landscape of rolling hills, ancient vineyards and historic estates stretching from the Apennines to the Mediterranean coast. At its heart is Sangiovese, a grape capable of producing everything from bright, savoury everyday reds to some of Italy's most complex and long-lived wines.

Chianti and Chianti Classico are Tuscany's best known expressions of Sangiovese, typically combining red cherry and plum fruit with herbs, spice, fresh acidity and firm tannins. Further south, around the hilltop town of Montalcino, Sangiovese reaches another level of concentration and longevity in Brunello di Montalcino.

Tuscany has also been at the heart of modern Italian winemaking. From the 1970s onwards, pioneering wines such as Tignanello challenged traditional appellation rules by combining Sangiovese with international varieties and modern winemaking techniques, helping establish the group of wines that became known as the Super Tuscans. On the Mediterranean coast in Bolgheri, Sassicaia demonstrated the extraordinary potential of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in Tuscan soils, paving the way for other internationally renowned wines from the region.

Today Tuscany combines tradition and innovation particularly successfully. From fragrant Chianti Classico and powerful Brunello to the polished Cabernet-based wines of Bolgheri and iconic Super Tuscans such as Sassicaia and Tignanello, it remains one of the world's great regions for distinctive, age-worthy red wine.
