California
California is the heart of American fine wine, combining a warm, sunny climate with an extraordinary range of landscapes, soils and cooling influences from the Pacific Ocean. From the celebrated vineyards of Napa and Sonoma to the cooler coastal regions further south, it produces wines ranging from powerful, concentrated reds to elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Napa Valley is California's most famous wine region and is particularly renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing richly structured wines with ripe black fruit, cedar and spice that can develop beautifully with age. Neighbouring Sonoma County is more varied, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel all flourishing across its diverse valleys and cooler coastal vineyards.
Closer to the Pacific, regions such as the Santa Cruz Mountains, Russian River Valley and Santa Barbara County benefit from cooler conditions that allow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to retain freshness and complexity. The Santa Cruz Mountains are also home to Ridge Vineyards, whose legendary Monte Bello vineyard has demonstrated the exceptional quality and longevity that Californian Cabernet can achieve, while the estate's old-vine Zinfandels have become benchmarks for one of California's most distinctive varieties.
