Austria
Austria has established itself as one of Europe’s great sources of distinctive, terroir-driven wines, combining remarkable precision, purity and freshness. At the heart of its finest dry whites are Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, producing everything from vibrant, mineral wines for early drinking to powerful, complex examples capable of developing beautifully with age.
The dramatic, terraced vineyards of the Wachau, rising steeply above the Danube, produce some of Austria’s most celebrated wines. Here, differences in vineyard aspect, elevation and soils create remarkably individual expressions of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, with leading producers such as Veyder-Malberg and Rudi Pichler renowned for their precise, site-driven wines. Nearby Kamptal and Kremstal add further diversity, producing wonderfully expressive wines that combine ripe fruit with characteristic freshness and mineral definition.
Further east, Burgenland enjoys a warmer climate and is home to both distinctive red wines and some of the world’s greatest sweet wines. Around the shallow Neusiedlersee, conditions are particularly favourable for noble rot, allowing producers such as Kracher to create extraordinarily concentrated Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, combining luscious fruit and richness with the acidity and freshness required for exceptional longevity.
From razor-sharp dry Grüner Veltliner and Riesling to intensely concentrated, age-worthy sweet wines, Austria produces an extraordinary range of styles from a relatively small vineyard area, with precision, freshness and a strong expression of place running through its finest wines.
