Spain
Spain is one of Europe’s most exciting and diverse wine countries, combining centuries of winemaking tradition with a new generation of producers increasingly focused on freshness, individual vineyards and expression of terroir. From the great Tempranillo based reds of Rioja and Ribera del Duero to the old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena of Priorat and Atlantic-influenced whites of Rías Baixas, Spain produces an extraordinary range of distinctive wines.
Rioja remains at the heart of Spanish fine wine, renowned for beautifully balanced reds combining ripe fruit, spice and the complexity of extended oak ageing. Historic producers such as La Rioja Alta continue to demonstrate the remarkable elegance and longevity of traditionally made Rioja, while a new generation is exploring individual villages, vineyards and fresher, more site-driven styles. Further west, Ribera del Duero produces richer, more powerful expressions of Tempranillo, while the steep slate llicorella soils and old vines of Priorat give intense yet increasingly refined wines from Garnacha and Cariñena.
Spain is equally exciting for white wine. Along the cool Atlantic coast, Rías Baixas is the home of Albariño, producing fresh, aromatic and often saline whites, while regions across the country are rediscovering native varieties and historic vineyards. From traditional Gran Reserva Rioja to powerful mountain reds and vibrant coastal whites, Spain offers remarkable diversity, character and often compelling value.
