Chateau Musar 2000, Bekaa Valley, Lebanon, 75cl
Chateau Musar is one of the Middle East’s most historic and iconic wines, renowned for its distinctive character and remarkable longevity. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault from mature bushvines near the Bekaa Valley villages of Aana and Kefraya, it combines ripe fruit with savoury spice and complexity. Perfect with slow-roasted lamb, grilled meats, venison or richly spiced Middle Eastern dishes.
"At over 20 years after the vintage release, the 2000 holds on to its primary fruit whilst really starting to reveal the classic Musar identity, balancing out the characteristic sweet spice and desiccated fruit notes with more evolved elements of leather, tar, tobacco and a hint of game. These complex aromas and flavours are lifted with a fresh lick of acidity that will ensure the wine will continue to age gracefully for years to come." Chateau Musar
"At first taste, it seems quite developed, with notes of forest floor and a bit of chocolate. But then it opens up and shows unexpected aromas of sandalwood, curry and leather, expressing itself on the palate with elegance and restraint. It reminds me of a 1920 Rioja, in the sense that you assumed that it was close to its end, but then it gets better after four days, showing its amazing capacity to develop positively. This is a challenging wine, but lovely. Drink 2020-2030." Decanter, June 2020
