2023 Balfour, Skye's Chardonnay
Named after the eldest daughter of Balfour's founder, Skye's Chardonnay is a celebration of Burgundian winemaking adapted to the unique terroir of Kent. Produced from Burgundy clones grown in the estate's finest vineyards, this unoaked Chardonnay undergoes full malolactic fermentation, extended lees ageing and regular bâtonnage, creating remarkable texture and complexity without the use of oak. Evoking the purity and minerality of fine Chablis while remaining distinctly English, the 2023 is regarded by Head Winemaker Fergus Elias as the finest release to date.
Its vibrant citrus fruit, creamy texture and crisp mineral finish make it an excellent partner for grilled sea bass, Dover sole, oysters, scallops or crab. It also shines alongside roast chicken, creamy mushroom risotto, asparagus, goat's cheese and light pasta dishes, while its freshness makes it equally enjoyable as an elegant aperitif.
"The 2023 Chardonnay Skye's is crafted from Kent-grown fruit and made in stainless steel. The shy nose offers a spike of bright lemon, priming us for the lovely brightness and precision that follow on the palate, while overtones of peach shimmer. The palate is beautifully focused, tight, and lemony, with citric smoothness and concentration. There is a lovely directness, textured focus, and vivid brightness to this wine, lending beautifully pure length. Drink 2025-2035." Vinous.com
