Pian delle Vigne is the Antinori family's historic estate in Montalcino, acquired in 1995 and situated around six kilometres south-west of the town. The vineyards are planted predominantly on clay and limestone soils with a south-westerly exposure, producing a particularly elegant expression of Sangiovese.

Made from 100% Sangiovese, Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino is traditionally matured for around two years in large oak casks, rather than smaller barriques, helping to preserve the purity and character of the fruit. The style is refined and classically Brunello, combining ripe red cherry and plum with violet, Mediterranean herbs, spice, liquorice and cocoa. Silky tannins and fresh acidity give the wine both elegance and excellent ageing potential.

"The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and powerful, with wave after wave of balsamic spices, wild herbs and crushed black cherries emanating from the glass. The depth of texture here is something to behold, weighty and fleshy in feel, yet perfectly in balance, as brisk acids enliven the gobs of red and black fruits within. The tannins take a backseat as nuances of plum, clove, licorice and cocoa appear under an air of purple-tinged flowers.
