Rhone
Stretching from the steep, granite slopes around Côte Rôtie and Hermitage in the north to the warmer, sun-drenched vineyards of Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas in the south, the Rhône Valley produces some of France's most distinctive and characterful wines.
The Northern Rhône is the home of Syrah, producing powerful yet elegant reds with dark fruit, pepper, spice and savoury complexity. The great appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage range from fragrant, finely structured wines to some of France's most profound and long-lived reds. Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier produce the region's distinctive whites, including the celebrated wines of Condrieu and Hermitage Blanc.
Further south, the climate becomes warmer and the wines increasingly rely on blends. Grenache takes the leading role, supported by Syrah, Mourvèdre and numerous traditional varieties. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the best-known appellation, while Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Rasteau and the broader Côtes du Rhône offer everything from generous, fruit-driven reds to complex wines capable of considerable ageing.
From peppery Northern Rhône Syrah and aromatic Viognier to rich Châteauneuf du Pape and mature Hermitage, the Rhône offers remarkable diversity, character and value at every level.
