Rudi Pichler, Gruner Veltliner Federspiel 2025, Wachau, 75cl
Rudi Pichler is one of the leading growers of Austria's Wachau, producing beautifully precise wines from the steep terraced vineyards around Wösendorf. The estate works with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, with an emphasis on purity, freshness and transparent expression of the Wachau's distinctive rocky soils.
The Grüner Veltliner Federspiel is a wonderfully fresh, approachable expression of the variety. Medium-bodied and dry, with crisp orchard and citrus fruit, subtle white pepper and a refreshing mineral finish, it combines plenty of character with the lightness and energy typical of the Federspiel style. Delicious on its own, but particularly good with grilled fish, schnitzel, salads or lightly spiced Asian dishes.
"The 2025 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel is from 22 different plots across the plain and hills, with a harvest spanning six weeks. Flinty reduction trembles deliciously on the nose. Concentration, smoothness and a salty, umami-inflected unity propel the palate forward, offering much more than the usual Federspiel, with fullness and bundled savory freshness that makes the mouth water with gentle hints of citrus. What a mouthful of svelte, energetic wine. Drink 2026-2040." Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous.com
