2023 Carignides, Domaine du Meteore
Nestled high in the Haut-Languedoc mountains, Domaine du Météore is one of southern France's most fascinating estates. The organically farmed vineyards surround a 200-metre-wide meteorite crater that struck the region over 10,000 years ago, while schist soils, cooling mountain air and Mediterranean sunshine combine to produce wines of remarkable freshness, purity and sense of place. Carignides is the domaine's celebration of old-vine Carignan, showcasing just how refined and elegant this often-overlooked variety can be.
Carignides is a beautifully poised old-vine Carignan offering aromas of earthy blackberries, bramble fruit and dark cherries, with hints of cocoa, wild rosemary and the surrounding garrigue. The palate is generous and richly fruited, packed with ripe black fruits, yet lifted by vibrant acidity and silky, polished tannins. A distinctive mineral thread from the schist soils brings freshness and precision to the long finish, making this an elegant, beautifully balanced expression of Carignan rather than the rustic style the variety is sometimes known for. Perfect alongside slow-roasted lamb, grilled duck or hearty Mediterranean dishes.
