Georgia

Georgia is one of the world's oldest wine-producing countries, with a winemaking history stretching back more than 8,000 years. Its remarkable heritage is built around hundreds of indigenous grape varieties and the traditional use of qvevri – large clay vessels buried underground in which wines are fermented and aged.

The country's best-known regions include Kakheti, the heartland of Georgian wine, where native varieties such as Saperavi and Rkatsiteli produce deeply characterful reds and distinctive whites. Traditional qvevri-fermented white wines, often made with extended skin contact, can develop their characteristic amber colour, texture, savoury complexity and gentle tannin, a style that has helped inspire the modern revival of amber and low-intervention wines around the world.

From powerful Saperavi to aromatic, textured qvevri and amber wines, Georgia offers a fascinating glimpse into both the ancient origins of winemaking and one of its most distinctive traditions.
