2007 Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese Lange Golkapsel, Schloss Lieser (Magnum)
"Haag’s 2007 Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Auslese Long Gold Capsule is scented with singed peach, wood smoke, lemon verbena and peony; displays a distinctly botrytized, honeyed, caramelized, and white raisin-studded palate; and finishes with effusive tropical fruit richness and persistently heady floral perfume. I again miss the delicacy, penetration, and minerality of the corresponding gold capsule Auslese (A.P.#10), but this too should have a felicitous 25-30 year future in the bottle.
Thomas Haag has enjoyed another sensationally successful vintage, and given his penchant for extremely ripe, pure Riesling with high residual sugar, it was perhaps not surprising that the virtues of 2007 would dovetail nicely with his favored style. Haag finished harvesting already on October 27, but as he points out, his crew was able to go from morning until evening without significant interruptions thanks to the persistently clear weather."
