2020 Rocas de Sena, Eduardo Chadwick
Produced from selected parcels across the Seña estate, Rocas de Sena offers a refined introduction to one of Chile’s most celebrated vineyards. Sena ("signature") is the collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick created to showcase the exceptional terroir of the Aconcagua Valley set between the coastal and Andes mountain ranges, north of Santiago. This Chilean icon gives its First Growth peers a serious run for their money but is still available at a fraction of the price.
Rocas de Sena is a blend of Malbec, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Petit Verdot. The generous 2020 vintage comes in a beautfiul blue presentation case and is drinking beautifully now, yet has the balance to age confidently over the next decade and beyond. It is beautifully refined with blackcurrant, cherry and blackberry, layered with Mediterranean herbs, violets, mint and subtle mocha from 22 months in French oak (65% new). The palate is poised and fresh, with finely integrated tannins and an elegant, understated structure that favours finesse over power.
"The 2020 Rocas de Seña is the first vintage to be released on the market. A blend of 38% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Grenache and 8% Petit Verdot, it spent 22 months in French barrels, two thirds of them new. Purple in hue. The aromatic profile features country herbs, cherry and wax notes followed by hints of blackcurrant and blackberry against a cedar backdrop. Juicy on the palate with refined, reactive tannins, it has a core of vibrant freshness that invigorates the mouthfeel and lends energy to the long finish. Drink 2023-2035." Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous.com
