2001 La Rioja Alta, Rioja Gran Reserva 904
Gran Reserva 904 is one of the great reference points of Rioja and the flagship wine of La Rioja Alta. First produced in 1904, it is made from the finest Tempranillo parcels and only in exceptional years, typically just three or four times per decade. The wine undergoes extended ageing in American oak followed by further maturation in bottle and is only released when the winery considers it ready to drink.
The outstanding 2001 is widely regarded as one of the finest releases of 904 ever produced, standing comfortably alongside legendary vintages such as 1964 and 1973. Aromas of tobacco, tea leaves, balsam and spice lead to a velvety, layered palate of dark fruit, leather and savoury complexity. Fully mature yet wonderfully fresh, it is drinking superbly now but will continue to evolve gracefully for decades.
"Alluringly complex aromatics, balsamic with sweet spices, red fruits, dark chocolate. The palate is startlingly fresh, balanced between cherry red fruits, liquorice and cinnamon, with notes of dried herbs. 2001 was an exceptional vintage – and this is proof: well structured, with distinct tannin and with many years ahead of it. Drink 2020-2035." Decanter
