Wine Highlight: 2016 Chateau Musar
We are delighted to feature one of the world’s most distinctive fine wines – the legendary Château Musar of Lebanon – and in particular, the outstanding 2016 vintage. Often referred to as the “Lafite of Lebanon”, Musar has built an international reputation for producing wines of remarkable character, longevity, and soul.
Made from a traditional blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, and Carignan, the fruit comes from low-yielding, mature bush vines planted on gravelly soils over limestone in the Bekaa Valley, near the villages of Aana and Kefraya. Many of these vines date back to the 1930s, with an average age of around 40 years, yielding just 15–35 hl/ha. Farmed organically at an elevation of 1,000 metres, the grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged patiently. Musar’s reds spend seven years in the cellars before release.
The 2016 vintage is deep ruby in colour with aromas of red cherries, plums, and figs intertwining with a subtle note of eastern spice. On the palate, flavours of kirsch and plum are layered with blackcurrant, chocolate, and gentle spice, framed by velvety tannins and impressive depth. The wine finishes long, with a lingering complexity that promises even greater rewards with time in bottle.
Mature vintages of Château Musar are often compared to beautifully aged Bordeaux yet they remain available at a fraction of the price. The 2016 already offers immense charm, but like all great Musar vintages, it will continue to evolve gracefully for decades.
