2014 Riesling Wolfer Goldgrube Spatlese, Daniel Vollenweider
"Issuing as usual from old, conspicuously genetically diverse vines in the Portz section of Goldgrube – with no fruit having been creamed off for a gold capsule bottling or an Auslese – this gorgeously combines creaminess of texture and luscious succulence of ripe apple and white peach with invigoratingly bright lime juiciness and utmost transparency to stony and crystalline nuances. Bittersweetly perfumed flowers run from the nose across the palate. A cooling hint of tarragon informs the lingering, shimmeringly mineral finish – to which piquancy of pit and pip lends stimulating counterpoint. This reminds me of a Zilliken Riesling inasmuch as 80 grams of residual sugar come off as entirely supportive and in no way superficially sweet. Drink 2016-2028.
