2006 Chateauneuf du Pape, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne
"A vintage that’s always shown well, the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is a classic, textbook example of this cuvee. Full-bodied, rich, structured and with high, but sweet, tannin, it has fantastic black cherry, currants, licorice, and roasted herb-like qualities all soaring from the glass. While it’s approachable now, it needs another handful of years in the cellar.
One of my favorite producers, Vieille Julienne is run by the brilliant Jean-Paul Daumen. Coming all from a cool, mostly sandy terroir located in the northern part of the appellation, these traditionally made wines possess singular characters that have both richness and depth on the palate, as well as notable elegance and freshness. They epitomize this tiny terroir and are more Vieille Julienne than they are Chateauneuf du Pape." Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate, Aug 2014
